How We Test and Score Products
Exactly how we evaluate products, what our scores mean and how we tell you which products we tested ourselves.
How we reach a verdict
Every verdict follows the same five steps. Each product page says plainly whether we tested it ourselves or built the verdict from specs, expert tests and owner reviews.
Read our full methodologyStart with your needs
We define who the product is for and what problem it should solve before looking at any models.
Gather the evidence
Manufacturer documentation, independent lab tests, owner reviews and, where we can, our own hands-on use.
Compare like for like
We line up competing products on the features that change the experience, not the ones that pad a spec sheet.
Weigh the trade-offs
Every product gets honest pros, cons and a clear note on who should skip it.
Score it and say why
A score out of 10 and a plain verdict: recommended, worth considering or skip it. We revisit it when products or prices change.
Three ways we reach a verdict, always labelled
- Tested hands-on: a member of our team used the product for its intended job, under the same checks as its competitors
- Used long-term: we have lived with it for three months or more and report how it holds up
- Researched: we built the verdict from manufacturer documentation, independent lab results and patterns in owner reviews. We never present research as hands-on testing.
What we look at
- Performance in the job people actually buy it for
- Build and reliability, including common faults owners report after months of use
- Ease of use, from setup to everyday controls and apps
- Value against typical prices in the US, UK and India, plus running costs
- Support and warranty terms in each market where we can confirm them
What our score means
Every product gets a score out of 10, shown on our ruler. 9 and above is exceptional; 8 is a strong recommendation; 7 is good with clear trade-offs; 6 and below means most people will be better served elsewhere. Scores are compared within a category, so an 8 for earbuds and an 8 for a robot vacuum each mean “one of the best you can buy” in that category.
What our verdicts mean
- Recommended: a strong choice for the people described in “buy it if”
- Worth considering: good for some people, with trade-offs to understand first
- Skip it: most people will be better served by an alternative we name
Reader reviews are separate
Owners can review any product. Their star ratings are shown beside our score but never change it. When many owners report something we missed, we re-check the product and update our verdict.
Prices
Prices change often, so we show typical price ranges and send you to stores in your country for the current price.
